LayarHijau.com – The growing global appeal of Chinese dramas and celebrities took center stage at the “From Local to Global—Pathways to International Communication Breakthroughs” forum, held during the 30th Shanghai TV Festival on June 24 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The event featured prominent figures in international media, including Vietnam’s YeahH1 Group Chairwoman Le Phuong Thao, Meta’s Head of Global Partnerships for Greater China Wu Zimin, and Google China’s short drama team representative Zhang Xinyu.
According to Sohu Entertainment, Wu Zimin highlighted several Chinese celebrities who have successfully “gone global.” One key example was Esther Yu, who now boasts over 4.2 million followers on Instagram. “Her fans are young and come from a variety of regions, including Southeast Asia, Brazil, and even the United States,” Wu explained. “In just the past year alone, she has gained around one million new followers.”
Other rising stars from Huanyu Entertainment—Bai Lu, Xu Kai, and Wang Xingyue—are also seeing growing international recognition. Their Instagram follower counts have reached 2.3 million, 2.1 million, and 513,000 respectively. Combined, their following exceeds 5 million. Wu noted that their reach extends throughout Southeast Asia and even into Latin America. “If you check the comments on their posts, you’ll see fans from all over the world expressing gratitude for their updates, saying things like ‘Thanks for sharing your news on Instagram, we love you!’”
Meanwhile, Elena Sambom, Chairwoman of the Moscow World Content Market, revealed that ten Chinese dramas are currently enjoying immense popularity in Russia, receiving high ratings between 7.4 and 8.8 throughout 2024. Leading the list is The Double, with a score of 8.8. Following closely are Blossom in Adversity, The Tale of Rose, The Legend of Shen Li, and Amidst a Snowstorm of Love, all romance-themed series.
Other well-received titles among Russian audiences include To the Wonder, set in the scenic region of Altay and praised for its stunning visuals and heartfelt themes. Additional hits like A Moment of Youth, Will Love in Spring, and The Wind Chaser have also gained traction for their compelling storytelling and well-developed characters.
This rising popularity indicates that Chinese dramas—and the stars behind them—are not only captivating domestic viewers but also attracting fans from across the globe, crossing cultural and geographical boundaries.
