LayarHijau.com – The Chinese short drama Qilin Delivers Children, Bringing Blessings from Heaven (Mandarin title: 麒麟送子,天降喜福) has sparked widespread controversy due to its bizarre and exaggerated storyline. In the drama, the female protagonist gives birth to 99 sons in a single pregnancy. The babies are even stacked like “beef rolls” and transported to the imperial palace. After going viral and reaching over 44 million views, the drama has now been taken down from online platforms.
The plot follows a woman who miraculously becomes pregnant with a “dragon seed,” triggering a celestial sign known as “Qilin Stepping on Clouds.” In Chinese mythology, a qilin is a legendary creature symbolizing peace, good fortune, and the birth of gifted children. This divine omen supposedly indicates that the child will bring great blessings to the nation. However, instead of admiration, the storyline was met with backlash for distorting traditional beliefs and objectifying women’s reproductive roles.

In one scene, an evil court official even accuses the newborns of being "monsters destined to destroy the country’s future." Medical experts and viewers alike criticized the drama, noting that the biological limit of a single human pregnancy is around 15–20 babies at most, with extremely low survival rates.
On June 15, actor Wang Yuwei, who plays the male lead, responded in a livestream. He expressed regret for taking the role and blamed his agent for persuading him to accept the project. “I only realized how crazy the story was after reading the script. It’s really insane. I agreed without even reading the script,” said Wang Yuwei, as quoted by Jiupai News.
The drama’s director also commented via social media, humorously deflecting responsibility: “I already felt like I was losing my mind during filming. If you have complaints, find the screenwriter—it was all their idea.”
Netizens quickly reacted with a mix of shock and sarcasm. Some of the most viral comments include:
“This drama lives in its own fantasy world, completely detached from reality.”
“Vulgar, ridiculous, and clearly made to grab attention. How did it even become popular?”
“It’s brainless entertainment. If you take it seriously, you’ve already lost.”
The scandal has reignited discussions around creative boundaries and the responsibilities of creators behind China’s growing short drama trend. Many are questioning how such an outlandish show made it to public platforms and became viral before being pulled.
