LayarHijau.com — Wang Churan once again captures public attention through her upcoming costume drama Hidden Shadow, which is reportedly scheduled to premiere on May 7. In this drama, Wang Churan stars alongside Li Hongyi (The Blood of Youth), playing a unique character with two different personalities: a ruthless female assassin and a gentle noble lady.
The drama is adapted from the novel The Female Assassin of the Song Dynasty by Xiu Tang, and tells the story of “Mei Jiu,” also “An Jiu” (played by Wang Churan), a girl with two souls within one body. She joins the Crane Control Army in search of her missing mother.
During her mission, she meets the young general “Chu Dingjiang” (Li Hongyi), who harbors a dark secret. The two form a bond as they fight through danger together. In the novel, An Jiu also becomes entangled in a love triangle with Hua Rongjian (Yan An), a refined nobleman who falls for her, according to Upmedia.
Recently, the drama’s trailer was released. Chinese netizens felt that Wang Churan was able to convincingly portray the two different souls, Mei Jiu and An Jiu, who inhabit the same body but have distinct personalities.
When playing An Jiu, her expression is sharp and determined, often shown in armor, armed with daggers and a bow. Meanwhile, as Mei Jiu, she appears soft and innocent, with gentle expressions and elegant clothing. Her ability to portray this contrast earned her much praise from netizens, who are eager for the drama’s premiere.
The series also features several notable characters, including Ai Mi, known for her role as Wu Jinyan’s maid in The Double, who now plays the antagonist “Ru Yan” or Mei Ruyan.
In the novel, Ru Yan is an acquaintance of Mei Jiu who is later adopted into the Mei family. Eventually, she chooses to oppose her friend Mei Jiu / An Jiu because of her lover. Of course, the drama version may differ from the original novel.
In addition, actor Jeremy Tsui (Xu Zhengxi), known from dramas such as Love of Nirvana, also appears as a charismatic emperor named “Jing Rong,” adding further appeal to the drama.
Although Wang Churan is currently receiving positive reactions from netizens in China, her career has not always been smooth. When she starred in Fireworks of My Heart alongside Yang Yang, she became the target of public backlash. Not only Wang Churan, but Yang Yang also faced heavy criticism.
That disproportionate negative reaction seemed to follow her and influenced how audiences viewed her acting in Joy of Life Season 2.
Things began to turn around after her drama Are You the One with Zhang Wanyi achieved phenomenal success. Thanks to that drama, she proved herself and is now one of the public’s favorite actresses in China. It’s no surprise that audiences are now excitedly waiting for Hidden Shadow.
