iQIYI announced on Tuesday, October 22, that it will launch a new Gold VIP Family Membership package on November 12.
According to the streaming service, iQIYI Gold VIP members only need to add 8 yuan (approximately $1.17) for the first month to unlock an additional Gold VIP member account. The Family Package account will be paid monthly by the primary account. Passwords, device management, and viewing history for family members will be independent of the primary account.
Compared to the current monthly membership card, the Gold VIP Family Card package provides a more economical option for two accounts within a family.
The cost of using the monthly membership card will be reduced to 33 yuan (approximately $4.78), saving 17 yuan (approximately $2.45) per month. If two family members need to use iQIYI membership services, they can choose for one person to subscribe to this package, paying 25 yuan (approximately $3.60) per month to activate the monthly membership card and adding 8 yuan (approximately $1.17) to provide an independent membership account for the other family member, along with a password and viewing history.
Family card users no longer need to worry about confusion between TV drama progress and viewing records, as two independent accounts can log in on five devices each, ensuring that the use of both accounts does not interfere with one another. This new service is designed to meet the entertainment needs of family members while helping to reduce disruptions and risks associated with password sharing.
In fact, iQIYI is not the first streaming platform to offer low-cost additional account services. Previously, foreign streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+ also launched similar services, which received positive responses, according to Sohu.
According to data, due to the newly added additional account service, Netflix's number of paying members increased by 10% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2023. This indicates that the low-cost additional account model has a significant impact on the commercial growth of streaming platforms. Netflix itself released a family package called the household plan to combat account sharing practices that have been claimed to cause financial losses for the service.
It remains to be seen whether this family package will be released in Indonesia and other countries, and whether it will complicate the account-sharing practices that iQIYI users have been engaging in.
